The one thing I most distinctly remember from when I went to Rome as a young, bright eyed 20 year old was the water system. It’s incredible. There are thousands of clean, fresh, water sources springing from the most ancient beautiful looking structures. They’re called Nasone, and it’s so silly but it honestly blew me away.
I also remember being struck by how old the city felt, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. You could see the architectural history in a way I’d never seen in a city before. It was more than that though, I can’t explain it beyond you just felt the age of the place sink into you with every step and every breath.
I’d gone to Rome in 2009 during a similar time of year, but I certainly didn’t remember the intensity of the heat. I mean, it was hot in a way where you just feel the sun radiating off of every surface toward you. We spent the last few days of our Italian vacation in the heart of the city. The first night we walked to the Trevi Fountain to see it at night, which is my absolute favorite sight of the city and my favorite way to view it. It’s really breathtaking seeing the water rush and flow over such a dynamic sculpture light up in the darkness.
The next day we’d booked tours for the Colosseum and the the Roman Forum which I’d highly recommend. They’re crowded and booking a tour guarantees your entry. It would be a huge bummer to go all that way and not be able to go in, right? We wandered around for as long as we could in the heat before trying to squeeze in a nap. Michael and I hid in the bathroom with negroni’s while Rory slowly put herself to sleep in her crib.
On our last full day we headed towards the Vatican City to see the Necropolis and St. Peter’s Basilica. It still amazes me how much you find from the ancient world just simply underneath the existing buildings, but my favorite was always St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s just simply beautiful, and so large it’s an incredible feat of architecture. The last time we went I was not Catholic, so it held a special meaning for me as I walked through those doors as a member of the faith. I went and said some special prayers in a little chapel while Michael and Rory wandered around.
The last and most hilarious moment I will always remember from Rome is when we walked into the Vatican Museums and Rory noticed the mosaic animals on the floor. She first started saying hi to them, and then suddenly just kneeled down and started kissing them all. I will never forget that sweet spirit in all my life, even if my momma germ worrying mind cringes at the thought of it.
