After a few days in Lake Como, we left for Lucca in the heart of Tuscany. About a four hour drive, Rory did surprisingly well, especially when we found her some chicken nuggets to snack on along the way. Our home in Lucca was historic and so beautiful, our AirBnb’s really were amazing.
The first day we drove up to Cinque Terre to see some of the Mediterranean. It was packed you guys. I’d gone back in 2009 and while busy then, it was nothing like it was now. So, just keep in mind if you do go, you’ll be experiencing some crowds. However, it is charming and old world and really does make you feel like you stepped back in time. Also, I had the best meal of the trip here, an amazing shrimp pasta with red sauce. The shrimp were so large they were basically lobsters and tasted like them! The pictures of Rory devouring her pasta from Cinque Terre might be my favorite from the trip. Girlfriend just dug in and went for it. We left by mid afternoon as it really looked like rain was threatening and we were so happy we did get back to Lucca at a reasonable time to rest after a long day walking the streets.
The next day we spent in Florence and I was hit with such nostalgia. That’s where I lived in 2009 for 10 weeks and man it felt like home. However, Florence was also packed with tourists. In one of the panoramic pictures from the top of the Duomo it looks like at first glance the streets are black. Nope, it’s swarms of people. It honestly did take away from the magic of the city a little bit, but it was so special to take Michael and Rory to the city that taught me so much about myself and the world. Studying abroad is life changing.
