I always know it’s fall when it’s time for apple picking. It’s one of our family traditions and it really kicks off the holiday season for me. I still believe New York apples are the best I have ever tasted, but Lynd Fruit Farm is not too shabby. I just love their whole atmosphere. There are rows of trees for as far as you can see, a pick your own pumpkin patch, and a wonderful market where I stock up on the freshest vegetables.
Rory really loved the orchards this year. She ran in and out of the trees grabbing as many apples as she could manage to hold. We had to run chase her as she did not discriminate between healthy, ripe apples and rotting ones that had been on the ground for a bit. I can still hear her belly giggles and her pride at her independence as we showed her how to pick her own and as she raced around us. It’s going quick. Having these pictures we do every year really shows the passing of time. Last year she couldn’t walk, she barely had hair and we nervously let her taste a bite of our own apples. This year she’s a wild, vivacious, apple hoarding queen.
That’s why pictures are so important to me. I remember last year, but I did not remember just how little she was compared to now. It goes so quick and it is such a gift to be able to look back and relive that day last year. It is a gift to see her so little in my arms and to see how our love looked then verses now. It’s my way of preserving our family story.
