2019 really was the year of travel for us. We thought we were done after Europe, and snuck in Disneyworld. We for sure thought we were done for that, but we were wrong again in the biggest way. One of my coworkers was getting married and we had the incredible opportunity to travel to India and attend his wedding. We couldn’t pass it up. So in early December, Michael and I packed our bags and headed off on the longest flight I’ve ever been on.

We landed in Mumbai, very very early in the morning, but managed to squeeze in a few hours of sleep before heading out into the city. I honestly had no idea what to expect. Mumbai was a very urban city that also felt like there was a jungle hidden behind its skyscrapers. The smog and haze was intense. I’d experienced that growing up in LA with June gloom, but this was different. Even a full day of sunshine couldn’t burn through it all. We viewed some of the main sights and then settled in for a fancy dinner at the Taj. I mean, the food was amazing. You think you’ve enjoyed naan until you’ve eaten it in India. I know it’s basically table bread, but it was what I looked forward to at every single meal. I still dream about that naan. It’s the little things right?

After spending three days on the Arabian sea celebrating the amazing wedding of my friend, we landed back in Mumbai and set off for Jaipur. This city was my favorite of all we saw. It was pink, so of course that gave it a big boost, but also it was quieter than Mumbai and you could see an older history to the city than what we saw in Mumbai. We spent quite a bit of time at the Amer fort, which was our favorite stop of the whole trip. You could wander around the old fortress and palace pretty freely and the architecture was only something I’d seen in storybooks.

Our last stop was to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. A grueling 7 hour car drive took us there from Jaipur. I recommend you find another way to get there if you go. The Taj was beautiful, but unfortunately hidden from a lot of our view due to the winter fog. However, I’m still very glad I got to see it at all. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be back to India and I know I would have regretted it if I’d not gotten there. The detail work of the calligraphy and the gemstone inlays was amazing. They say it completely glows if you visit it on a full moon. How incredible would that be to see? Maybe we will go back just for that.

All in all, India was filled with unexpected and wondrous sights. The food was unlike any I’ve had before and I know I’ll still be dreaming of that naan when I’m 85.
